P. A. Smith
Embarking on a martial arts journey at the tender age of three, Smith Sensei has cultivated a deep and diverse understanding in the realm of martial arts that spans decades. With a profound commitment spanning over 24 years in Bujinkan, along with substantial training in MMA, Muay Thai, Kali Arnis Eskrima, Kenpo Karate, and Okinawan Karate, Smith Sensei's experience encompasses a vast spectrum of martial disciplines. His exploration into the arts didn't stop there; dedicating time to Taekwondo, Aikido, Jeet Kun Do, BJJ, and various other styles, Smith Sensei has honed a unique blend of skills and philosophies that transcend any single discipline.
The pivotal moment in Smith Sensei's journey unfolded when he met Paul Fisher Sensei at 17. Fisher Sensei was the first to challenge Smith Sensei, a tough and troubled kid, to adopt a stance of respect, professionalism, optimism, and self-respect. This relationship set the foundation for a lifelong pursuit of not just martial excellence but also emotional and spiritual well-being.
By the direction of Fisher Sensei, Smith Sensei was introduced to and began to train under Dick Severance Sensei, with Mark Belyeu, a main deshi of Severance, playing a crucial role in his development. Under their guidance, Smith Sensei learned the importance of emotional regulation, safety, and the sense of belonging. The teachings of patience, kindness, and accountability he received are cherished as the most valuable lessons, transcending physical training to impart life-altering wisdom and a sense of community.
The transition to New York marked another chapter in Smith Sensei's martial arts journey, where he, again with the direction of Fisher Sensei, continued to grow under the training of Chris Chen Sensei and eventually other local instructors. This period was marked by continued exploration and deepening of his martial arts practice, emphasizing the importance of community, tradition, and mentorship in his development.
After helping set up and film a seminar for Andrej Jasenc Sensei in New Jersey, Smith Sensei shifted all focus to earning the opportunity to train with Jasenc Sensei. Eventually, his dedication and determination were recognized, and he began his tutelage under Andrej Jasenc Sensei, whose teaching mirrored the empathy, adaptability, and depth of knowledge that he had come to value so highly. Jasenc Sensei's approach not only enhanced Smith Sensei's physical prowess but also deepened his understanding and appreciation of martial arts as a holistic discipline. This mentorship with Jasenc Sensei was instrumental in allowing and preparing him for further training in Japan, at the esteemed Ishizuka Dojo, where for a month trained with Ogawa Sensei under the guidance of Ishizuka Soke. During this trip, under the watchful eyes of Ishizuka Soke and Hatsumi Soke, Smith Sensei earned his Godan rank and Shidoshi License.
His return to Japan in 2023, invited by Jasenc Sensei to train alongside him and his master, Ishizuka Soke, was a testament to Smith Sensei's dedication and the respect he had earned in the martial arts community. This experience, training with Jasenc Sensei's personal students and other renowned Japanese instructors, was not just an opportunity to refine his skills but also a profound personal and cultural immersion.
The legacy of these mentors deeply influences Smith Sensei's approach to martial arts, embedding a philosophy that martial arts training is more than physical discipline; it's a pathway to personal transformation and societal contribution. His training philosophy, deeply rooted in traditional values, emphasizes the holistic development of practitioners, valuing mental, emotional, and spiritual growth alongside physical prowess.
Today, holding the rank of Rokudan (6th dan) and a Shidoshi License, Smith Sensei's dedication to martial arts is evident in his commitment to teaching and sharing the profound lessons learned on his journey. The rich tapestry of his training, the wisdom of his mentors, and his own experiences shape a unique and deeply insightful approach to martial arts education, reflecting a lifetime dedicated to the pursuit of excellence, understanding, and the nurturing of future generations in the martial arts community.
